About "Her"

This story is about polygamy in Indonesia. For citizens of Indonesia in early 19, it was common for a husband to have more than one wife. “Her” is story from first wife's side, how she accepted her husband's decision and still be a good wife for him.

At first, the first wife was confused, broken and lonely. She even thought about death, but she didn't want to let the second wife take care about her childerns. Yes, her husband had hurt her but she managed to accept that because all she wants were her husband to be happy and be a great wife for him. She tried to be strong for childerns good.

In years her husband has 2 wives. Everytime the husband talked about the second wife, she chose to be patience but couldn’t lose the feeling of rejection. She couldn't bear the loneliness but she didn't want to against her husband too.

Then, she joined a woman’s club. It distracted her from the husband and second wife. She got a high position because her husband were high official. The feel of longing was gone, and she could welcome her husband home with a smile. Once she met the second wife at the conference woman’s club. It fell in an awkward moment because the moderator called out both last names. The she appreciates the second wife because she kept the other wife feeling. Then she realizes and happy because she knows, the second wife wants to make her husband to be happy too just like her and she has right to have a husband.

Characterization of the first wife is patience, strong, understanding, faithful and full of love. She will do anything, even if it would hurt her feeling, just to make her husband happy. For me especially, this is very romantic.

And for the husband, for me, he is very greedy. I will never understand why a guy married more than a woman. He had a beautiful wife who adores him so much and still not pleased with that.

I will never agree with polygamy, but we can learn from the first wife about the true love. Love is when you will give everything you have just to make the person you love happy.  Otherwise, we can learn how she makes a deal with herself and can see the truth even when she is hurt.
